Actors who join the Summer at Sem Theatre summer camp program will discover acting, dance, and vocal skills, along with stage presence and performance coaching. Our comprehensive program allows students to develop stage skills while working as a collaborative ensemble.

All theatre students will get the chance to participate in one-on-one working sessions with our Director of Theatre in their acting, singing, and auditioning skills. Individualized attention for each summer theatre student offers participants of all backgrounds and experience levels an opportunity to engage in working on stage, and off. Theatre students will meet and talk to theatre professionals from all facets of the industry currently working on Broadway in our master class series.  Performance opportunities showcase students in our state-of-the-art performance spaces and on our beautiful campus. In recent summers performances have included musical theatre, Shakespeare, pop/rock music, original monologues and scenes, and fully produced Broadway musicals.

Our Summer 2022 Broadway musical is The Fantasticks! The world’s longest-running musical with a rapturous score by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones come to the Kirby Center for Creative Arts this July. All theatre program students will play an integral role, on stage and off, in bringing this beloved musical classic to life with a culminating performance at the end of this year’s theatre program. Take center stage this summer with this exciting musical!

The Fantasticks is presented through a special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI.

To see people who have truly made it in the industry was amazing and then for them to help us and give us advice on how we can possibly make it was phenomenal.

Theatre Auditions

Requirements

  • Campers should submit an audition that includes a monologue from an American copyrighted play/theatre piece not exceeding one minute and a musical excerpt from a Broadway show not exceeding two minutes, with accompaniment. Please refrain from submitting any a cappella singing. Your video submissions are not “auditions” in the traditional sense, they are used to give the director and faculty some insight into your performance skills and training. Have fun!
  • In addition to an audition, campers must also submit a completed online application.
  • In lieu of an audition students can arrange a Zoom interview with our director. Please contact info@summeratsem.org to schedule.

Guidelines

  • Use the best available visual and audio devices possible. Film as if at a live audition.
  • At the beginning of the audition:
    • State the camper name, age, and place of residence (US state or country if international)
    • State the name of the monologue/song
  • At the conclusion of the audition:
    • Have the camper state “I have reached the end of my audition” and repeat their name.
  • Naming the Audition File:
    • [Program] Audition: Full Name, Date
    • Theatre Audition: Taylor Smith, 01/02/2020
