Experience boarding school life in the United States.
The English Language Institute at Summer at Sem is a worldwide leader in teaching language and culture to international students ages 12-18. Our four-week residential summer camp is a perfect fit for students looking to study in the United States and improve their language skills in a fun and immersive environment.
Students also explore areas in the northeastern United States with their classmates and teachers during the last week of the program. Highlights include college and university visits as well as historical, cultural, and natural sights.
The English Language Institute is part of Wyoming Seminary, an internationally-recognized college preparatory school located in northeastern Pennsylvania.
Having recently celebrated its 175th Anniversary, Wyoming Seminary has a long history of summer programs dating back to at least the 1920s, and a dedicated history of English language programs.
The English Language Institute offers morning language instruction in grammar, vocabulary, and fundamentals of English. Afternoon classes are taken with a focus in either:
- Discover Academic English: This class is a blend of reading and writing focused language learning. Students will learn and develop core skills that support critical thinking and analytical writing in English.
- English 360: A collaborative class that allows students to practice language production independently as they study high interest topics, travel locally, and create projects to showcase their content and language learning.
Every night during the week, students have supervised Study Hall to ensure enough time is set aside from our fun-filled schedules to complete all assignments.
Afternoon activities keep campers busy and having fun whether they are creating masterpieces in our art studios, swimming in our indoor pool, or participating in the Summer at Sem Kickball League on Back Campus.
Weekend Trips allow our students to travel to culturally significant cities such as Philadelphia and New York City. These trips give students an opportunity to learn more about the United States, our history, and practice their language skills outside of the classroom.
During the last week of camp, students travel off-campus with faculty and staff for a five-day adventure to see even more of the United States on a fun-filled trip! Join us as we tour colleges and universities, explore museums and amusement parks, and try all different kinds of local/American cuisines! Cities visited on past travel sessions include Boston, Massachusetts; Burlington, Vermont; New York City, New York; Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Maryland; and Richmond, Virginia.
