Traditional language learning has been impacted by the pandemic. In response, Summer at Sem is offering a student-driven, active English language program. Using engaging, high interest topics, students will be asked to think critically and express themselves regularly in discussions, writing, and formal presentations in a small group setting.

Build confidence in the essential skills that language learners need to succeed in academic environments.

The English Language Institute at Summer at Sem continues to be a worldwide leader in teaching language, academic skills and culture to international students ages 12-18.

For 2021, we will continue to offer students a virtual ELI program with native English speakers.

The English Language Institute is part of Wyoming Seminary, an internationally-recognized college preparatory school located in northeastern Pennsylvania. The Institute works in partnership with the English Language Learning (ELL) program at Wyoming Seminary.

Proposed curriculum: Oxford University Press Q Skills for Listening and Speaking

A blended curriculum is taught by experienced native speaking language teachers. The program includes daily synchronous classes and one-to-one conferences led by experienced native speaking language teachers.

Student learning will focus on:

  • Academic vocabulary building
  • Building confidence in speaking English in the classroom
  • Developing critical thinking skills
  • Deepening reading and listening comprehension
  • Improving coherence in writing

Meet Our Director

Jeni Brown

Jeni Brown has been working with English language learners of all ages since 2001. After graduating with a BA in history from Oakland University, Mrs. Brown relocated to Taipei, Taiwan and taught English learners while continuing to study Mandarin for five years. She then relocated to the United Kingdom to complete her Master’s degree in history while continuing to teach English to young adults from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East as well as older members of the Chinese speaking community in Manchester. After graduating, she returned home to the U.S. where she taught in an ELL department in southern California. For more than a decade, she helped to develop and strengthen one of the few comprehensive high school ELL programs in the country and spearheaded the revival of the English language summer intensive in both Seoul, Korea and Idyllwild, California. In 2018, she joined the Sem community as the new ELL Chair and became the Program Director of the English Language Institute for Summer at Sem.

Each student is unique and with small class sizes and the benefit of regular one-on-one virtual conferencing, our faculty are able to provide students with individualized instruction and feedback each week. Be ready to engage, reflect, connect, and develop the skills and confidence you need to succeed.
